SUMMARY: Set on the evening after Charlie’s funeral. Short and angsty. Sara’s pov.
“Don’t shut me out Jack. Not while we’re alone.”
Your voice is foreign, even to your own ears. You suppose your throat is hoarse from the sobs that have wracked through you for the past few days. You imagine your husband’s – should he attempt to speak – would be much the same.
Your husband - your dashing Colonel - is sat hunched on your back porch, elbows resting on his knees and his head in his hands. This defeated position of the man you love is almost as devastating as the loss of you baby.
He sits as still as he had at the funeral, posture rigid and eyes dark and empty. You feel helpless – as useless as you had when he had returned from Iraq, and only then had your baby been able to bring him back to the man he had once been. Now, your baby boy is gone, and you worry your husband may be lost to you forever.
Offering what little consolation you can – when all you want is to be held and loved and consoled yourself – you tell him you love him, and your hands reach up to his, drawing them away from his drawn face. His hand lies limp in yours, and you feel the tears begin to burn against your eyes once more. Exhaling slowly, you caress his warm palm. You beg him, “please Jack. Don’t do this to me.”
You finally feel his fingers respond to yours, whisper; “I lost him too, Jack” in an effort to share you grief. Distantly, you remember your mother telling you a problem shared is a problem halved, but you don’t think anything could reduce the pain that is invading your empty heart.
Your husband doesn’t respond to your hushed words as well as you might hope, instead, snatches his hand back and leaps back into the house. It will be until years to come that your husband understands your words as an accusation rather than a counsel.
